Defeating narratives
of division
London - June 7
By 7 June, there will be less than four years to the most likely date for the next general election. If the direction of travel in this country does not change, then politicians will be competing to ride a toxic current of narratives of division to the door of number 10.
As part of our efforts to equip our movement with both an analysis of why these narratives of division have become so virulent at this time, and the skills to intervene effectively to build trust, confidence and engagement between ‘majority’ and ‘othered’ communities, we are calling a national conference in London on 7 June. We want a conference that brings together a wide range of people of goodwill, who are committed to rebuilding an inclusive ‘story of us’. We want to create an opportunity for people who share concerns but don’t normally meet, to discuss what can be done.
We want people from faith and community groups, from trade unions, from the democracy movement, and people representing the communities who are the targets of these narratives, people from racialised minority communities, from the LGBTQ+ community, women, disabled advocates etc. We also want a mix of institutional leaders, funders, and grassroots activists.

We know from other events we have held around the country, that there will be a great deal of interest in attending and we don’t think a ‘first come, first served’ approach to the limited number of places available is the best way forward. Which is why we are asking people to complete an Application form . If you do not get allocated a place at this conference, we guarantee that we will find another opportunity for you to take part.
We are interested in

-
how narratives of division and the authoritarian populists who promote them are a threat to the rule of law and democracy itself.
-
how we can involve a wide range of social justice groups (anti-racist, women’s rights, LGBTQ+, disability, climate justice, workers’ rights etc.) in attempts to prevent power being handed to those who would roll back historic gains.
-
how the virus that is narratives of division spreads, and how we can disrupt it.
-
how we engage with those people within our communities who believe that their best hope for the future involves disenfranchising and marginalising minority groups?
